A majority of furniture in the living space is ‘loose’, meaning they are easy to move around. The aim of using such furnishings is to give the residents the option of opening up the room for more free space. Every inch within the unit is used to its fullest potential. A sitting area within the walls is located right next to the entrance, which can act as a place for people to rest or for extra storage space. Also within one of the walls is a work table that can be pulled out for use or remain hidden when conserving space. Leading residents up towards the second level is a recessed handrail and floating staircase. Both elements are designed to serve their purpose yet at the same time create a sense of spaciousness.
Main materials used in the realization of this design are plastic laminated wooden flooring, artificial stone, and stainless steel. The combination of white, grey, and yellow colors creates a warm ambiance. The total area of the space is 470 sq ft.
From the moment someone steps into the unit, they’ll see and feel the broadness the room provides. The various pieces of furniture around the unit can interact with one another as they can be pushed, pulled, or moved aside. The lines seen throughout the space act as a guide that leads to the second level, which provides an open view of the whole room.
The project was completed in September 2015 in Hong Kong. The design team, led by Regina Kwok, faced the challenge of creating a space that fulfills the role of being a home and a workplace. In order to achieve this, they strategically placed furniture that fulfills only one role in a location that is out of sight when the room is performing the other role. The bed is on the second level, unseen by guests from the ground floor, and the work table can be tucked away inside a wall when not in use.
